Cruising
Cyberspace
Web
Site Pick Of The Month
By Pam Wegmann
The world is shrinking
and moving faster every day. There are numerous organizations, particularly
news organizations, who keep up in real time with the swift pace of these
changes and will be a source for us on December 31 to monitor Y2K issues
as the midnight hour creeps around the globe. The online home of
one of the better known of these news organizations is:
http://www.cnn.com
This is the
Internet version of Cable News Network, best known as CNN. If you can’t
be near a television, yet are near an Internet connection, you can check
out the latest news from almost anywhere on earth, including video on selected
stories straight from the TV broadcast.
This is a site
that is updated multiple times per day depending on breaking news.
It’s as current as its sister television version.
The Home page
contains the latest headlines and news briefs with their links to
the full story. Those links ending with a movie camera icon
also
have video broadcast.
In the left
frame of CNN’s home page there is a long list of multiple subjects on which
to click: world news, U.S. news, local news, politics, weather, business,
technology, sports, space, health, entertainment, and more. Clicking
on any of the links takes you to a handful of stories and additional links
on the subject.
The front page
is actually fairly long and requires significant scrolling.
Other sections on this page include the following:
- Vote of the day.
Voice your opinion on a variety of current topics.
- Weather. Find out
where it’s sunny or raining anywhere in the world
so you can plan
your travel.
- Feature stories.
Stories of interest that are not necessarily connected to the current news.
- Sports scores.
Didn’t get a chance to check last night’s scores? Regardless of the
season or sport, you can find out who won and lost.
- Stock Quotes.
You can launch from here to learn what the Dow or NASDAQ is doing today
or check on an individual stock by entering the ticker symbol.
Lastly, with
today’s blending of the TV and the PC, you can click on
the Listen To CNN
Live link to see the broadcasts live on your PC.
So now, between
your television and your computer, you need never be in the know for the
news. On December 31, this site will be able to let you know
if indeed there is a Y2Katastrophe.
Knowledge is Power!
