Site Pick Of The Month
By Pam Wegmann
Time is marching
on. There's a deadline coming for all businesses that can't be pushed back.
It's called the Millennium Bug and you can find out what to do about it
at
http://www.itaa.org
From this, the home
page of the Information Technology Association of America, you can jump
to their Year 2000 link, one of the best and most reliable sources for
information on the Year 2000 issue, aka, the Millennium Bug. By now,
everyone knows that this bug can affect computations which calculate age,
sort by date or compare data.
The link provides
the background of the issue in plain non-techno babble English. Scroll
down the screen to the bouncing arrows and you can link to:
- The ITAA's weekly
newsletter, where you can peruse articles on various business and technical
aspects of the Y2K problem.
- The Certification
Program page, where your company can make an application for certification
of your Year 2000 process and methods. The ITAA has been chosen as
the official Year 2000 Compliant Certifying agency for the information
technology industry. You aren't officially compliant unless
they say you are. (This writer has heard from business banking circles
that Y2000 compliance documentation is already or will be a requirement
for most loan applications.) This page also provides a link to a list of
88 companies who are already "Certified Companies." The list includes ADP,
Bellcore, CACI, IBM, GTE, Grumman, Computer Associates and Prudential.
- A White Paper on
the Global Impact Of Year 2000 Computer Processing Problems On Citizens,
Business & Government.
- A Calendar of Year
2000 events, conferences and the like scheduled worldwide.
- The Year 2000 Survey
Page. Here you can find research done by various companies on the impact
in a given area such as advertising or health care.
- The Year 2000 Bookstore,
which is quite limited at this time. There are only 5 titles, but you do
get Table of Contents links so you can browse the contents of the book.
- Additional Y2K
links and resources.
Visit this page.
And then take whatever action you need to make your company Y2K compliant,
even if you don't need ITAA official certification. Five years from
now, if you find yourself in court, you won't be able to say "Gee, I just
didn't know..."
