Cruising
Cyberspace
Web
Site Pick Of The Month
By Pam Wegmann
More so than any
other industry today, the technology industry and its many faces has become
part of our daily lives and conversations. Not a day goes by that the media
does not cover some new dot com start up, or the IPO (Initial Public Offering)
of some new telecommunications company, or how some new bio-tech company’s
research will affect our future medical treatment. Sifting through the
information overload to determine how it may affect your business can be
daunting. But here’s a site that can help:
www.redherring.com
This is one of the
three personas of Red Herring, a company that specializes in reporting
on the business of technology. The company provides market information,
insight, and access to entrepreneurial communities.
The other two personas
of this company are Red Herring Magazine, published in hard copy, whose
articles appear on the Web site, and Red Herring events, where connections
are facilitated between venture capitalists and companies seeking venture
capital.
The Internet side
of the business provides analysis and commentary on the business of technology
and how it affects the economy, the stock market, and industries. The site
provides pre-IPO and IPO company tracking, investment information, and
follow trends and people making news in the technology industry. At the
time this column was being researched, an upcoming chat with Michael Dell
of Dell Computers was being advertised.
The site is cluttered,
and has a tendency to overwhelm you with too many choices. Many articles
are good but redundantly housed on multiple sections of the site.
Individual pages are very long requiring lots of scrolling, too.
However, the site does have a lot of good solid information worth reading.
Currently, on the
Home page, there is a list of the Herring 100 from its hardcopy June
issue. This is a list of the top fifty public and top 50 private companies
in the digital economy.
At the Inside Tech
page you will find recent news articles on companies and on technology
trends and industry shaping events.
Click on Investor
News and get an IPO Calendar or search for a quote on a ticker symbol or
name of a company.
Clicking on the Industries
link on the left column, will locate articles and discussions on how e-commerce
will affect all industries, including traditional industries like retail,
automotive, or oil and gas. Read about the moves industries are making
toward doing business online in the emerging world of B2B commerce.
At the VC & Startup
link, learn about venture capital news and new tech company start ups.
You can also join online communities and subscribe to an e-mail newsletter.
While the site is
visually cluttered, and some of the pages are extremely long (to accommodate
advertising), overall, this site provides plenty of useful information
that every business person needs in order to understand the technology
and how its going to affect their business.
Knowledge is Power!
